AFTERWARD, MORGAN went to the house. It was empty, of course. Damn River! How long would he be gone? A couple extra days or not, the guys would be back from their cruise soon. How would Morgan explain River’s absence? Then again, this was the type of shit River pulled. He had warned Morgan—everybody had—from the beginning. Had Morgan listened? Of course not. He’d been too busy flirting with River and spinning these fantasies around him.

Morgan clamped down on the growing disappointment building inside of him. No sense feeling sorry for himself. He had offered all he had and River had chosen to leave rather than talk with him. Morgan pulled out his phone and began scrolling through the Mr. Romance website, but closed it after seeing only a few profiles. He’d rather be alone, and he wasn’t ready to act as if nothing huge had happened. Something huge had occurred. No matter what River said, denied, or ran off to do. He had been right there with Morgan. Morgan knew River had felt something too. He stared at his phone.

Don’t do it.

Jamming his phone in his pocket, he went and stripped his sheets. He had taken to sleeping with the radio on—anything to avoid the silence. As he began a load of washing, his phone buzzed with a text. Morgan braced himself. It was most likely Logan calling about earlier, or his dad calling to check on him. Only it wasn’t them. It was River.

Are u okay? I know u hate being alone

Morgan’s mouth hardened. He wouldn’t give in to this. Be all grateful River was checking on him or thinking about him. River couldn’t have it both ways. He couldn’t walk off and still expect to be the good guy. He didn’t get to jerk Morgan’s feelings around as if he were some puppet. Maybe Morgan wanted him still. He did. River’s leaving like that wasn’t okay. He was fucking furious with him and achingly lonely without him.

Morgan ignored the text.
